Let’s talk to Reggie’s owner about treatment options

This sounds really complicated and I am often out for much of the day. Does he really need all of these tablets?

Listen to Mrs Richardson, Reggie’s owner

How will you respond to Mrs Richardson?

  • Option A

Reggie’s condition is very serious and multiple medicines are required in order to give him the treatment he needs. He definitely needs all of these tablets to give him the best chance for a longer life.

  • Option B

A long-term treatment with multiple medicines can be an expensive option. However, we have a range of pay-monthly health plans to help make Reggie’s treatment plan more affordable. Would you like to take at look at the options?

  • Option C

As Reggie is now showing symptoms of heart failure, it is important we use more than one medicine to control his symptoms. Ideally, I’d like Reggie to receive all four medications, but as this is not possible, we can start him off on just a diuretic and continue the Vetmedin® which clinical research has proven to be the best option. We will continue to monitor his condition both at home and in the follow-up appointments. Depending on how he responds, we can then adjust his treatment plan as necessary.

How will you respond to Mrs Richardson?

Correct

Reaching a compromise based on evidence-based practice and implementing a stuctured follow-up shows Mrs Richardson you have heard her concerns, whilst instilling confidence that Reggie is still receiving the best care possible.

QUEST study

The QUEST study demonstrates that Vetmedin® almost doubles survival time compared to benazepril (an ACEi) alongside furosemide in dogs with CHF.6

How will you respond to Mrs Richardson?

This may not be the best way to respond

Forcing Mrs Richardson to comply with your recommendation, and not listening to her concerns, will make her feel that you’re trying to control her and trigger ‘reactance’.

Present other options and engage Mrs Richardson in the decision making process, so she feels involved in Reggie’s care.

Communication pillars

How will you respond to Mrs Richardson?

This may not be the best way to respond

Mrs Richardson is concerned about the complexity of Reggie’s treatment, rather than the cost. By not acknowledging her concern, you may undermine your credibility, and she is less likely to follow your advice.

Employ ‘tactical empathy’ to reach a compromise.
